Places to See in Fukuoka
The most famous shrine in Fukuoka is the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shinto shrine which was built in honor of Suguwara No Michizane, the legendary 9th century scholar (12,000 other shrines in Japan were constructed in his honor). The recommended time to visit this shrine is February or March, just as the 6000 plum trees in the garden around the shrine bloom. If you are in the area in the first Sunday of March you can witness the poetic "Kyokusei-no-en" festival.
The Fukuoka Castle Ruins make a remarkable site and a Must See in the Fukuoka area. This castle was built at approximately 1601, during the Edo-era, but of its magnificent 47 towers very little is remained today. And yet, the visitors who will find the energy to mount to the top of the ruins will enjoy a breathtaking view of the bay area and the city.
Shofukuji Temple, just near to the Hakata station, is the oldest documented Zen temple in Japan. In the center of the crowded urban life, noise and technological present, this temple is a quiet haven that seems to be trapped back in time. A slow walk through the forgotten, shady gardens and the peaceful atmosphere manages to touch even the most cynical of hearts.
Art lovers will appreciate the many fascinating museums the city has to offer like Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, the Genko Historical Museum and many others. Perhaps the most known museum in the city is the Fukuoka Art Museum which is stationed in Ohori Park. Visitors who will take the time to explore it will be surprised to find that it contains varied artistic styles including the works of prominent artists such as Mark Rothko and Salvador Dali.
But aside from its religious, historical and cultural value, Fukuoka is known for being an energetic city with rich nightlife, bars, restaurants, cinemas and many pleasurable entertainments. The wise tourist will do best to enjoy both worlds.
